Kashmir is a beautiful state in India, and it is often called the “Paradise on Earth,” and among its breathtaking valleys lies a stunning gem—Doodhpathri. Located about 42 kilometers from Srinagar in the Budgam district, this destination attracts tourists each year in both summer and winter, who come to experience moments of adventure and peace amidst nature’s beauty.
During our trip to Kashmir, I (Sanju) and Mahi Ma’am decided to immerse ourselves in the splendor of Doodhpathri. The best time May to September visit in this Magical place, when the weather is pleasant and nature is at its peak.

Doodhpathri is truly a remarkable destination, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. When I think of the valleys of Kashmir, vivid images of snow-capped peaks, verdant meadows, and stunning vistas flood my mind.
Nestled in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, Doodhpathri is often lovingly referred to as the “Valley of Milk” due to its enchanting landscape During our trekking adventure, Mahi and I had the pleasure of experiencing horse riding in this beautiful location.
The lush fields of Doodhpathri, combined with the refreshing breeze, made our journey incredibly memorable. Riding through this magnificent terrain, surrounded by towering mountains and dense pine and cedar forests, was an extraordinary experience that I’ll cherish forever.
A trip to Kashmir feels incomplete without experiencing horse riding in Doodhpathri. This adventure showcases that Doodhpathri is more than just a tourist spot—it is a harmonious blend of peace and excitement nestled in nature’s embrace.
While horse riding, Mahi Madam and I not only enjoyed the breathtaking scenery but also listened to stories about Doodhpathri from our local guide. The tranquil atmosphere and the time spent in nature left a lasting impression on our hearts.

While we were enjoying the beautiful scenery on horseback, I chatted with the locals, and they shared two stories that explain the name of this place, passed down through generations. The first story is about shepherds, and the second is about water that resembles milk. The valley of Kashmir, known as ‘Doodhpathri,’ translates to ‘Valley of Milk’ for these two reasons.
In Doodhpathri, many locals refer to it as the “Valley of Milk” due to the clear and foamy flowing streams. From a distance, these streams give the impression of flowing milk, which adds to the enchanting beauty of this remarkable place.
Saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din (Nund Reshi) once visited this place. It is said that he quenched his thirst; he struck the ground with his staff to extinguish the fire, and a stream of milk-like white water gushed out. Later, when people came to this place, it was named Doodhpathri due to the milk-like stream.

1. Doodhpathri has been developed as a tourist destination only in the past few decades. Earlier, this place was accessible only to local people and shepherds.
2. Doodhpathri was originally a summer grazing land for local shepherds. The Gujjar and Bakarwal (local nomadic communities) used to come here every year with their livestock during the summer.
3. During the British era, this valley came to be called the “Mini Switzerland of Kashmir” because its meadows resembled the European Alpine pastures.
